Hazards Of Implant Surgery

Thanks to television and most other modern media, a lot of normal, everyday women were exposed to sensationalism of the huge boobs. That's right, I said it. With the success of television shows based primarily on showing scantily clad, big breasted women running towards the camera also came an increase in the number of women who wanted to look like what was on TV.

Now, don't think that I'm here to knock having some work done. A lot of women seem to be reinvigorated by these procedures. They're finding renewed confidence and happiness. Women who've lost natural breasts to cancer have a perfectly valid reason to want this kind of operation. That said, implants are known to be dangerous. If you are considering having breast augmentation you need to consider that before getting on the table. Implants are not an impulse decision like a tattoo or piercing.

Let me help clarify a few things for you before you go and get those 45's.

Risks associated with surgery

Surgeries in general are risky business. Implant procedures come with their share of potential complications. Some are relatively mild, like bruising and pain. Other potential hazards include risk of infection, internal hemorrhage and problems related to anesthesia. Reports indicate that a majority of women who get implants come back for additional work in about five years. It has also been reported that a vast majority of women (up to 70%) say that they regret getting the implants and would like to have them removed.

Individual hazards

Common complications include scarring, contraction of the breast wall caused by the implants, numbness or extreme pain, and capsular contracture. Research indicates that most women who get implants experience one or more of these effect within the first two years of having them.

Other localized problems include nipple discharge, lack of feeling in the breast, a sudden shifting of shape or volume is also common. Also consider that these kinds of surgery (and later repair or removal) are not covered by most medical plans. This means that you'd better keep some money saved away…just in case.

Other Problems

While a causal connection has not been made between breast implants and systemic complications, there have been instances where women with implants find themselves also dealing with diseases affecting the immune system. Tissue disorders and immunity problems thought to be connected to implants include fibromyalgia, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.
